Phones, AI and The Loss of Unknowing

2026-08-25

Remember when people used to complain that conversations can never have unknowns anymore, as whenever a factual question comes up, someone will inevitably pull out their phone and google the answer? I think a similar thing is happening with AI. It’s become so easy to get a solution, even to more complex questions, that people are becoming uncomfortable with uncertainty and imperfection.

A Self Perpetuating Problem

AI is good enough now that it can solve most low-mid level technical/computer problems (assuming the problem itself is actually solvable). This removes a lot of the incentive to ask for help on the internet, and because fewer people are making help posts, there will be fewer resources to find for help with a given problem. So people are going to become more dependant on AI.

End

Right now AI is my “last resort” for tech problems, I’m going to change that and start asking on reddit/stackoverflow again. AI should be a last-last resort, when truly everything else has failed.
